3. what kind of media institution might distribute your media product and why?

The kind of media institution that would distribute my movie would be an independent. English institution such as film four because they have made relatively low budget films like slumdog millionaire which has been incredibly successful grossing $377,417,293 with a budget of $15.1 million. This would be the kind of budget I would hope to receive to make this movie. Film four have also made successful movies like ‘In Bruges’ which was made for $15 million and grossed $33 million and ‘sexy beast’ which was made on a budget of $3 million and grossed $7 million in the us alone. They have a well recognised name and good publicity which would boost the profile of the movie with a good marketing department. My film is a thriller/horror and film four has successfully produced films within the thriller genre like ‘In Bruges’ and ‘slumdog millionaire’.

4. who would be the audience for your media product?

My main target audience would be 16 to 25 year old males and females if taken there by their boyfriend or husband, there is also another group of people targeted which would be the devoted horror movie watchers. The main target audience would be 16 to 25 year old males because they have the most disposable income, free time and they enjoy horror and thriller genres the most, many 16-24 year olds are in education, training or part-time workwhich gives them free time and money. also in the current economic climate many people at this age are unemployed giving them more free time.and going to the cinema still is a relativelly cheap past time. Films that would appeal to a similar target audience to ours would be ‘the orphanage’ ‘saw’ and ‘hostel’ which all are very successful movies with Saw, the budget was $1,200,000 and the gross revenue was $103,096,345. there would be a secondary audience of girlfriends of man who want to watch the movie as well. all of the movies listed appeal to the same audience as they show young teenagers and children as the victims. people that watch my movie would like to listen to heavy metal music and music from the emo genre. this kind of music plays heavilly in our movie and in others like it. 16 to 25 year olds tend to like horror movies for the jumps and scares that it provides especially males. arguably over 25's tend to like and watch movies with more psychological substance, with plot twists and could favour more character based movie than an action based one. this could be a movie like the pianist.

the process of planning our preliminary task was a lot easier and faster than planning our actual horror sequence. we were given a set stroyboard which we then had to shoot, planning took a couple of days. with our horror it took six weeks of planning to finally be ready to do our production. a lot of this time was spent making an idea and storyboards. we first needed to learn how to use cameras and we did this by shooting our prelim task, we took two actors and put them in a brickwall set in the studio. we then shot them from different angles experimenting with different shot types. we started producing a storyboard first draft after we came up with an idea. the shot types are relativelly easy to do but we had difficulty planning the time on each shot. and where the credits would come in. we went through many drafts of our horror production and the final draft was far from the same as our first draft.

editing my final project took about 4 weeks and involved staying afterschool on some nights we chose CU shots and ECU shots to conform with the thriller horror genre. we decided to experiment with a focus pull in our prelim which we then used in our final product. we looked at other horror movies to see that tension and shock make a good movie and we tried to create this through our shots and sound. when we were editing our sequence we had to choose between the short, fast shots and the relativelly long timed shots. we used a mixture of both to create the tension and anticipation that we did. this made it seem like a real thriller/horror production.

for sound we used folleys from soundtrack pro and edited them in, we used an eerie background noise to create tension through the sequence and use a silence at the end to put the audience on the edge of their seats the use of sound in our horror created tension and made our production seem like a real horror movie. in our preliminary task we used no sound apart from the ones recorded. in this one we cut sound, used folleys and crosscut screams and sound transitions. we added titles and credits last after we had edited our horror sequence. we put the titles in as they come in order in a real movie. we used made up production names and distributers like 'a storm cunningham' film these titles as white on a black background as in other horror movies this effect is used. we used no titles at all in our prlim sequence and overall we have greatly improved in the planning and overall production of our film sequence since the prelim task.

Shooting day.

On Thursday, December 21st, my media group shot our horror/thriller movie, ‘Mind’, e met together at 9 am. and we started the day by assembling our set with the set designer, we tore bloody rags, and placed them on the floor and dirtied our actors white dress. We decided to set up a row of candles on screws through a piece of wood the piece of wood then went under the carpet and through it with the candles stuck on top, we did this to illuminate our female actor as she sat on the floor. I had the idea to wax candles to the desk around the tools. This casted light over his blood stained tools.

We needed something to cover the floor in our set so we took some carpeting from the theatre department in school and borrowed some fake blood to cover the tools and rags, we had brought some cloth for tearing from a member of our groups home,

When the actors arrived we briefed them on what we required that day. Alabama Jackson aged 12 and Berika Mindeli aged 18. Amy, one of my group members took Alabama to change into the dress we wanted and put some white makeup on to make it seem as if she had been there for a while and was tired from struggling, the dress was white to show her innocence as this is shown in many other horror movies like the sixth sense. Berika was made to looked clean and respectable as we wanted him this way to show that he was not a maniac but a calm and calculated murderer/paedophile and so that he looked like an average man.

When we shot the sequence we diverted from the storyboards at parts so that we had more material to work with when editing. We did experimental shots like focus pulls. This has helped with the editing process as we are using the focus pull and other shots that were not in the storyboard. These shots as well as the shots from the storyboard helped to create tension and conform to the thriller/horror genre.

We weren’t quite sure if our female actor could make it because she may not have been let out of school. We only found this out on the morning of the shoot day, we spoke to her father Ted Jackson again and he said that he would try and get her. We asked another girl to play the part in case Alabama Jackson didn’t turn up. She accepted but in the end Alabama arrived and we used her.

For lighting we used artificial moonlight coming through holes in our boarded up window. We used candles and a light bulb dangling from the ceiling. We also used studio lights which we controlled from the lighting board when we needed extra light in a scene.

We kept our actors in complete silence until the scream, this helped create tension and then shock our audience with a loud noise, this is typical of a thriller or horror movie as they build tension through jumpy actions.

Our shoot day went very well, as we had enough footage time. We had doubts about how easy it would be to work with Alabama but she turned out to work very well and listen to what we said.
